The opening 45 seconds of 'Marcella', the 2016 ITV drama, begins by fading in from black, followed by a medium shot in which the main character emerges into. This immediately confuses the audience as we don't see her face  but we can tel by the lighting and music that the character is distressed. We get a sight of her bleeding temple which mirrors the effect of the lighting to create an ominous and mysterious image. The next camera shot is a compromised long shot, as she is crouched (from what we can see from behind the bloody glass) which makes the audience feel unsure and uncertain of whats to come, much like the character we see. Also, because it's handheld we are given a sense of horror, as if it is someone watching her. We are then given a close up tilt downwards of various parts of her body that are strained with blood and bruised-this all alludes t a conclusion that she has either hurt someone or been hurt. Moonlight Review

This is a film about an African-American man who is homosexual, living in a hood environment where that kind of lifestyle is not accepted. The film takes three chapters to lead us through his journey of life. The way Chiron's character is first portrayed really heightens the empathy we feel as an audience for him- his continued silence while accepting help from strangers immediately shows deprived he is of affection by his mother. He wears a face of defeat and his body language is slouched and not confident. This shows his emotion without the character having to speak: this is applicable to real life situations which is why this element had such an impact. As the chapters progress we are shocked with the change in levels of emotion, from the crippling violence to the first confirmation of his sexuality, and to his mother desperately seizing his money for  drugs. Music Video theory

  1) How does the  This Is America  video meet the key conventions of a music video? Firstly, there is lip syncing throughout the video which is the most common convention of a music video. There is then the performance element that uses narrative ad intertextuality to speak tot he audience.   2) What comment is the video making on American culture, racism and gun violence? He is highlighting the different racial injustices in the US by refering t different occurances of police brutality on black people. He also refers to differnt 'shoot-outs' and how loose the gun control is. 3) Write an analysis of the video applying the theories we have learned: Gilroy, Hall, Rose and Dyson.  In this video, Childish Gambino plays various different roles there are in American society today. The role he plays in the throughout the video which is consistent is 'the entertainer' which reflects how black people are always represented to be the clown or innately funny- we see...
