Coursework: Statement of intent LR

1st draft

My trailer will be of a dramatic coming of age film with narrative that the audience can relate to or has related to. The aim is for it to grip people with the same effect that 13 reasons why did to the teenage audience. The intertwining story lines are there to intensify the tragic coincidences that occur and highlight how hard it is for young people to go from children to adults. Each crossover of narratives has a certain irony that will be designed to make the audience invest their highest of emotions.
The brief will be met as there will be more than 3 locations used for each character. each scene will be short however it will establish when are where things happen and end for each line of narrative. The name of the film won't be revealed until the last 5 seconds of the trailer. The text will be on screen alongside hashtags and twitter pages for the film and production credits will follow shortly after. There will be no sound at this point to not disturb the effect the final scene in the trailer will have on the audience; the continuance of the song will take away from the effect it might have.
The mise-en-scene will be similar to that of The perks of being a wallflower in terms of their costume and props/setting. It will be designed to appeal to an audience that enjoys the emotional connection and in infatuation with a character that they can obtain by the uses and gratifications theory- some of the teenage audience may enjoy the personal identity with the characters as they are around the same age and face issues that are specifically difficult for young adults to overcome. The other side of the audience might enjoy the diversion or engulfing fantasy that the events would offer.
My characters will challenge typical stereotypes as the gang member will be gay- usually something near unacceptable within young demographics in London who are involved in gangs. The matter is rarely addressed in popular productions which is why mine will. The norm will be challenged not only by this character but the way the surrounding characters (the gang members) react and treat him, which will lead to the boys reaction and fate to be the mouthpiece for people who can relate.

Comments on Statement of Intent:

·         There is a great idea here and I like the way you communicate it using references to existing texts. However, as a statement of intent it remains vague in places and doesn’t cover the key concepts in sufficient detail. You’re also well under the 500-word length.
·         Make the beginning much easier to follow – give us a title, tagline etc. perhaps in bullet points.
·         Far more media terminology is required – look at the brief (minimum requirements) and then outline specific aspects you will create in your cross-media production that meets these requirements. What specific elements of mise-en-scene? Locations? Shots? Soundtrack?
·         No reference to the posters at all.
·         You need a lot more in terms of audience and industry (representation is good). Where are the theories? Target audience? Pleasures? Film studio and distribution?

Next steps:

·         Copy and paste this feedback to your Media 2 coursework blog with the title ‘Statement of Intent feedback and learner response’.
·         As your learner response, pick out the three improvements/changes you need to make to your Statement of Intent.
·         Re-draft your statement of intent using Microsoft Word. Sort out the organisation and use the guidance available to ensure all aspects are covered.

2nd draft

2nd draft

My trailer will be of a dramatic coming of age film with narrative that the audience can relate to or has related to. The name of the film is 'The lives we live' with the tagline 'a moment in time can last forever'. The aim is for it to grip people with the same effect that '13 reasons why' did to the teenage audience and spark emotional identity between them and the characters. The intertwining story lines are there to intensify the tragic coincidences that occur and highlight how hard it is for young people to go from children to adults. Each crossover of narratives has a certain irony that will be designed to make the audience invest their highest of emotions and feel frustration and pity for each storyline. This is an example of Neales theory of repetition and difference as the similarities between this and previous productions like ‘Love Actually’ and ‘Riverdale’  will be manipulated into suiting my target audience and will have originality to attract a wider range of people outside of the target audience. There will be 3 locations used for each character. Joel will have scenes in a house, a kitchen and the street. Each scene will be short, however it will establish when and where things happen and end for each line of narrative. Throughout, I will use a varying soundtrack depending on the pace of the scene and the emotion that I want the audience to feel- this will include artists like Billie Eilish for slow scenes with the female characters and artists like Nines for the fast paced scenes and gang related scenes so the audience can understand what they should associate with each character. The name of the film won't be revealed until the last seconds of the trailer for dramatic effect as people will be more engaged with the film by the end and are more likely to want to know what film it is after knowing what happens- this can be considered a marketing technique. The text will be on screen alongside hashtags and twitter pages for the film and production credits will follow shortly after so they are easy to find and will be the last thing they see after all the action (it will be in their short term memory longer if they see it last). There will be no sound at this point to not disturb the effect the final scene in the trailer will have on the audience; the continuance of the song will take away from the effect it might have. The mise-en-scene will be similar to that of The perks of being a wallflower in terms of their costume and props/setting as you will be able to see the characters personality through their clothing. The posters will be of the main character, Dean, with two of the posters including the two other characters that are less important but still add to the main storyline. I will use a medium shot for the poster that only shows Dean, so the audience can see his emotion and create identification with him, while the other two posters will have him alongside them but with the girls slightly out of focus and out of the way so it is still clear who the main character is. They will be shown in some of the vital scenes of the trailer, like the door he opens in the final sequence of the trailer or the park bench. My characters will challenge typical stereotypes as the gang member will be gay- usually something near unacceptable within young demographics in London who are involved in gangs. The matter is rarely addressed in popular/mainstream films, which is why it would be impactful to include. The norm will be challenged not only by this character but the way the surrounding characters (the gang members) react and treat him. This relates to Butlers gender theory as it would challenge he socialised norm that young black teens in London face and the aim of this is so the main character becomes a mouthpiece for those who might be able to relate to him. In terms of distribution, I would use Netflix as they have successfully distributed popular shows like ‘On my block’ which is similar to the storyline I have adopted in my film, and they also have a very high teenage usage so it is likely that it would get a lot of attention from people who watched Riverdale, The fault in our stars, or To all the boys I loved before as recently everything is algorithm based for commercial purposes, so they would be recommended to watch this film.
