Sound Analysis task

Diegetic/ Non-diegetic

2) Find a film clip on YouTube that uses sound in an interesting way. Analyse the use of sound, making sure you use the key language we have learned about sound in film:

  • Diegetic and non-diegetic sound
The Diegetic sound in this film clip is interestingly, the music. 'Baby', the main character, is partially deaf so he wears the headphones to drown out ringing in his ears throughout the movie. As a result, he is the only person who can hear the music, meaning the music is actually non-diegetic to the rest of the characters. Other diegetic sounds are the gunshots, sirens, and impacts of things being hit and jumped on/off of.
  • Parallel and contrapuntal sound
There is mostly parallel sound as the music is fast paced and matches the chase scene, alongside the other diegetic sounds like sirens.
  • Sound bridges
There are lots of sound bridges when the scenes move on to show the continuity of the situation- this includes the music and the sirens being heard while the scnes keep changing to different angles of people running and jumping.
